ATHRA - Association of Tourist and Heritage Rail Australia

The next meeting of ATHRA is to take place in Belgrave in March 2005

News from our Members

Australian Railway Historical  Society - Victorian Division.
The next "Great Railway Swap Meet" is to be held  on Saturday 19 February 2005.

The Society has as part of its raison d'etre,  a division devoted to operating rail tours over various parts of the rail network. Since the shut down of rail tours  in Victoria last year using heritage stock, they have now experienced difficulties in even running over the mainlines using the present state of the art railcars. This  resulted in the cancellation at very short notice, of a  trip which had been arranged for several months in advance with the authorities.

Victoria now has two operating Wig Wag signals. The signal at the Newport Museum has been restored to operating condition. The other signal is fully functional at Puffing Billy near Lakeside  Station on the local road leading to the kiosk.

D3 635 has been repainted.

Bellarine Peninsula Railway
The railway had a very satisfactory Christmas period and the use of engine No 4 on many trains with its low coal consumption helped the bottom line. In addition sales from the shop in Queenscliff was better than expected and there were more boarding's of passengers at Drysdale.

The railway is exploring the possibility of having members , families etc  adopting a station. The railway would provide a budget and as the station Laker's Siding is a green field site the ambience created would be unique to the area. In addition it is proposed to rename the station as it now more that an intermediate siding

Bendigo Tramway

VR 41

Painting of VR41 was completed in early January with sign writing being completed during the month.  The finished product is nothing short of resplendent, and it is hard to believe it is the same tram that arrived in Bendigo from the Melbourne Tramcar Preservation Society at Haddon in 2001. Approval for test running has been given by DoI after the submitting of the necessary documentation, and test running has shown VR41 to be a very smooth runner, with a very nice spur gear sound.

Test running will continue during January and February, and the current plan is to launch VR 41 back into service on 28th February 2005 – the 46th anniversary of the closure of the Victorian Railways St Kilda to Brighton Beach line, with VR 41 returning to Haddon in mid March.

Tony and the crew at Haddon can be justifiably proud of the tram, and it is a credit to their perseverance that the tram is operational again.

ESCo No 8

The defect in the motor that was found during testing has been repaired, and temporary panelling has been installed to the saloon sides. Further funding will now be sought to complete the tram.

North Melbourne No 4

The reconstruction of the frame and the repanelling of the tram are now complete, and the re-wiring is almost complete. Controllers, switches and grids have also been fully overhauled, with Stage 1 works expected to be complete by the end of January.

Brussels Trucks

The overhaul of the first of the Brussels trucks for use under Sydney J 675 has been completed, and the truck has been placed on display in front of the depot under a temporary roof. Overhaul of the second truck, which will be placed under Geelong No 2, has commenced, with the side frames being shortened to 8 ft wheelbase.

 Bendigo No 35

After the repairs were carried out to No 33’s trucks, the trucks under No 35 were removed after one of the motors showed excessive wear in the armature bearings. To enable No 35 to remain in traffic, a truck swap was carried out with No 31, with No 31 being placed temporarily out of service.

The trucks from No 35 were then fully overhauled, utilising some components from trucks previously acquired from the M T P A at Haddon to speed up the overhaul. Once the trucks were completed, they were placed under No 31, returning it to service.

Bendigo No 21

Work on No 21 has progressed, with the majority of the interior timberwork now scraped back and being revarnished.  Particularly impressive is the drop-end ceilings – those that  have scraped ceilings in the past knowing the effort needed to achieve a good finish would appreciate the workmanship that has gone into the ceilings.

The exterior has also been scraped back, and is currently being undercoated and filled prior to the final painting being carried out.

Cabin Fronts for E 118

The completed cabin fronts for E type No 118 were transported to Adelaide and installed on No 118 in December.

J Class No 675

After loading in Sydney the previous Friday, J Class No 675 arrived in Bendigo on Sunday afternoon 16th January 2005, being unloaded early on the Monday morning.  Accompanying No 675 were two 77E trucks and an O class truck which will also receive some attention in Bendigo.

Lake Extension

At its meeting on Wednesday 19th January 2005, the City of Greater Bendigo voted to scrap the proposed extension around Lake Weeroona, rejecting consideration of alternative proposals presented by The Bendigo Trust. Part of the motion to scrap the project also included a commitment from the Council to look at other ways of improving the operations of the Tramways and The Bendigo Trust over the next couple of years, so hopefully some of the essential upgrading of the existing tramway will still occur.

Gasworks Depot Clean-up

Over the Christmas-New Year period, a forklift was hired for a discounted rate and a tidy-up of the Gasworks Depot yard carried out. By stacking up a large number of items, shifting others, and sending off over 10 tonnes of scrap, the Gasworks Yard is now looking much neater.

Christmas Holiday Services 2004

Between 26th December and 26th January, 20 min services were again operated during the day, with hourly services operating into the evening from 5 pm to 9 pm.  Once again our crews rallied to the cause to ensure all services operated to time, and all roster positions were covered.  Running a 20 min service stretches our traffic and maintenance crews to the limits, and they are to be congratulated for their efforts in making sure the services ran seamlessly.

Annual Tram Cavalcade

The Annual Tram Cavalcade was held on Saturday 11th December 2004, with 18 trams lining up in Pall Mall. The two stars of this year’s Cavalcade were ESCo No 8 and VR No 41, which we received special permission from DoI to operate for the Cavalcade.  The 18 trams, in order from North to South, were Nos 33, 28, 16, 5, 19, 30, 466, 7, 9W, 15, 35, 25, 41, 8, 441, 44, 31, and 36.

Christmas Trams

This Christmas, No 30 was chosen by Myer again for Santa Tram duties.  It was joined this year by three other decorated trams, Nos 15, 36, and 441, with their sponsors donating the cost for materials for decorating each of them. The four trams were used heavily in the weeks preceding Christmas, and were also used to operate a special service to the carols at Lake Weeroona.

Puffing Billy - Emerald Tourist Railway Board

This year, 2005  is the 50th anniversary of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society. Puffing Billy is the third oldest preserved heritage railway in the world. Only the Talyllyn and Ffestiniog railways in Wales are older. It was partly the inspiration of the Talyllyn Railway that encouraged the establishment of the PBPS. From the establishment of the PBPS all other heritage railways in Australia owe their inspiration. Considerable planning is underway to ensure that the Jubilee is properly celebrated. An engine is being repainted in the red trim that it carried in the 1950's when the Society had the engines and carriages repainted at Upper Ferntree Gully. A set of carriages is having the original gold stripe repainted on them.

The railway is gearing up for the Great Train race in May. At Menzies Creek work is continuing of making the signal box fully operational with all points and signals controlled from the box.

The Climax engine has been stripped and the 1926 boiler has been taken out of the frame and sand blasted. The boiler is in remarkable condition considering its age.

The recent rain storm in February caused some mud-slips in cuttings and a number of trees fell across the line. Due to this on the day of the storm, trains were restricted to the Lakeside section only.

 Steamrail

Steamrail has leased T342 from the South Gippsland Tourist Railway. The engine , one of the first series flat top engines, is being upgraded and is to be hired to Pacific National.

In February and March Steamrail's depot at Newport is bring used to make a major movie.

Locomotive K153 was used on a trip to Geelong to deliver some Christmas cheer to children and for Santa to hand out some Christmas presents. The engine performed very well and needed the run to wear in bearing surfaces. K190 also had a trip to Geelong hauling five carriages and was used to qualify a new steam driver.

D3 639 while it did not receive any trips in 2004  was used as a stationary boiler to provide hot water to allow the boiler from A2 986 pass its hot water test. Work is continuing on the engine, A2 986, and the old boiler studs are being removed from the fire pan and other jobs under the boiler. The next work to be done is the re-tyring of the wheels.

Due to present difficulties in supervising young workers, Steamrail has reluctantly decided  not to allow any visitors or volunteers  under the age of 81 years unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The diesel fleet has received attention with much of the mainline fleet T class engines on hire to Pacific National. Work has occurred on S313 in preparing the frames for welding waiting on permission on the proposed remedial measures. This have subsequently been received and work has started on the welding. B72 is closer to completion and work has been done on the No 2 end electrical cabinet. Most side panels have been refitted with additional sound insulation. New headlight structures are being fabricated. Flat top T342 has joined the fleet being obtained from the South Gippsland Tourist Railway and will be placed on hire with the other mainline engines. Steamrail now has a representative of all of the four classes of T class engines.

Carriages are not being forgotten and work on recovering 63BW roof is being done. The body of the car is to be repainted.

South Gippsland Railway

The railway has made its flat top T class engine No T342 available on lease to Steamrail. In exchange Steamrail has loaned 63ABW to the railway to augment the carriage fleet.

Victorian Goldfields Railway

The official opening of the railway from Muckleford to Castlemaine will take place on Sunday 20  March 2005. Due to the construction works on the Bendigo line for the State Governments Fast Train Project the Victorian Goldfields railway is the only railway serving Castlemaine.

The railway has obtained on loan from Operation 707 their Y class engine no Y1217 and this engine  is at Maldon as a back up engine.

Steam locomotive J549 is being overhauled and need new tyres on its wheels which have been sent to the Puffing Billy workshops for attention. In the meantime T333 which can run on the mainline has been transferred to Pacific National for use by them. Likewise two hopper wagons have been leased to John Holland for the Fast Train Project.

A new arrival at Maldon is former V&SAR sleeping car "Tambo" which has come from the former West Coast Depot at Ballarat.
