The Diamond Valley Railway
is a 7.25"
(184mm) gauge miniature railway
located in Eltham Lower Park in the Shire of
Nillumbik. This railway carries the second
largest number of passengers in Victoria
carried by Heritage rail.
The railway was established
in the 1940's in Chelsworth Park Ivanhoe. Following
flooding by the Yarra River it was
re-established in the Eltham Lower Park in 1959. The
railway is a wholly volunteer orientated non-profit
railway. The main line is some 2km in length.
The line is fully signaled with colour
light signals and is controlled by two signal boxes.
The railway re-creates the 1920's
era and buildings, bridges, tunnels and other
infrastructure, all in scale,
conforms to this era. Both steam and internal
combustion engines are used for motive power as well as scale
electric trains.
Over 2.3
million passengers have used the railway since it
started passenger trains operations during October,
1961.
